A Career as a Pediatrician Essay

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” As a child, we have all been asked this question; and as unrealistic children, we all had dreams of being a superhero, princess, cowboy, or astronaut. Later on in life, as time went by, and as we became more knowledgeable, our answers became more serious. Some of us wanted to be teachers, business owners, or a veterinarian. However, I have always wanted to be a doctor, but not just any doctor. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to be a pediatrician. Now, half way through my junior year in high school, I have started to question the details of this career, and all the hard work it takes to become a part of the medical field.

Matthew Brennan from he Health and Pregnancy Center of WebMD says, “Pediatricians are physicians who specialize in the growth and development of babies, children, and adolescents” (WebMD). Pediatricians are responsible for assuring concerned parents that their precious child is on the correct track for a long and healthy life. While researching more on the tasks of these doctors, I found that they mainly examine the child before coming up with a diagnosis. A typical examine consists of checking their ears, reflexes, throat, etc. I had also learned that pediatricians are the first to examine a baby who is just born. They must be sure the new baby is breathing and responding correctly (WebMD). Now that I am sure what a pediatrician is, I want to know what it takes to become one. At this point in my search, I already know the process is a bumpy journey. What I have learned is that getting good grades in high school is very important because it is just the beginning to my future at this point. After graduating high school, I will finish my generals in college, which will take about two years because I am already taking my AA degree in high school. What happens next is when the real challenges will appear. The University of Washington says, “Before becoming a doctor, future medical students will take a pre-med course,” (UW Medicine). Do you enjoy working with infants, children, and teenagers? If you do then you might want to consider a job in the medical field as a pediatrician. Pediatricians are doctors who diagnose and treat: injuries, infections, and diseases for young people, as well as counsel them through hard times. A career as a Pediatrician is a good job for someone who wants to work in the medical field and enjoys working with children.
To become a pediatrician a person must have a diploma or GED, a bachelor’s degree; they must graduate from medical school, complete an internship, pass a state licensing exam, and complete a residency program in pediatrics. To get into medical school a person will need a Bachelor’s degree. Once a person gets into medical school they will be working to earn a Doctor of Medicine degree or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree. They will spend the first two years of medical school in classrooms and labs studying: anatomy, biochemistry, and medicines. They will also learn how to take a medical history, examine patients, and make a diagnosis. During the next two years, they will work in hospitals and clinics under the supervision of physicians (“Pediatricians”).It takes a lot of effort to become a pediatrician, but it is well worth it for those who enjoying doing the work and those who benefit from the work.
If a person wants to become a pediatrician the need to be prepared for the busy lifestyle and long hours of work the job provides. Most pediatricians work between 9 to 12 hours a day and 45 to 60 hours a week. Plus they may even have to work weekends and nights when on call, which can make it difficult to balance their career with family life or personal time (“Pediatrician”). Pediatricians usually work in community level offices or clinics, and always work indoors. Pediatrician also may have to travel between different offices and hospitals when their help is need.
